Sydney & New Year 2017

After Christmas we headed to Sydney for the New Year where we stayed in an AirBnB flat close to the famous Bondi Beach. The flat was actually quite a disappointment; a bit grubby with huge spiders in the staircase! Accommodation was really expensive in Sydney over the New Year weekend which is why had to settle for this more humble flat, but we tried not to let the condition of the flat bother us too much.

We had a couple days to do touristy stuff before the main event so we spent one day on the beach and one day sightseeing. Bondi Beach was crazy, especially after being to all those almost deserted beaches in WA! The lifesavers were constantly saving people from the rip even after warning about it numerous times...

On New Years Eve we headed out to one of the free vantage points to see the midnight fireworks. To our horror we were greeted by a kilometre long queue and the stewards saying that it’s almost full. And this was at 2 o’clock in the afternoon! We queued for half an hour, decided it was hopeless and headed off to Darling Harbour. They had fireworks there also which weren’t half bad. We ended up having a lovely evening with some sparkling and dinner.

We still had a couple days in Sydney after New Years so we did the Bondi to Coogee Beach walk and the Skywalk up the Sydney Tower Eye. The Skywalk was excellent with great views of the city and the surrounding areas. The beach walk was great too but the weather just wasn’t the best.

We did enjoy our time in Sydney, but were actually quite overwhelmed by the magnitude of the city. There was so much to see and do and we definitely felt like we only scratched the surfaced during the long weekend. But all in all it was quite a special New Years for us on our great adventure in Oz!

We headed back to WA with excitement since we knew January was going to be quite an amazing month with special visitors coming to visit us from Finland.
